We’re looking for a social media assistant to help launch and grow the online presence for our coming-of-age comedy short film, Midnight Murungai, a proof-of-concept for a feature film. Think Frances Ha meets Daria - but set in Toronto, featuring Tamil girls navigating the beautiful mess of family and fading youth.

 

You’ll help shape the film’s voice online through memes, reels, and behind-the-scenes content documenting the creative process, to nurture an audience. This role is perfect for someone who knows film, diasporic culture, and internet humor - and knows how to make it all scroll-stopping.

Your Role:

• Collaborate with the creative director and film director to execute the social media strategy effectively

• Repurpose existing content from the film into stylistic and comic internet-ready material (memes, reels, carousels, etc.)

• Write captions like a storyteller - bringing the audience along for the film's journey

• Scout for internet content aligned with the film’s vibe and themes for resharing

• Shoot and edit a few casual BTS or interview-style videos

• Stylize all content to match the film’s visual aesthetic

• Schedule and post content at optimal times on Instagram and TikTok:

  • 3 feed posts/week

  • 4–5 story posts/week

• Engage with commenters, DMs, and potential collaborators

• Stay aware of trends, and know how to subvert or remix them in a way that feels fresh

• Understand the tone: funny, dry, personal, a little chaotic

• Engage with the film’s themes, such as:

  • Growing up in the South Asian/ Tamil diaspora

  • The things we hide from our parents

  • Marriage pressure

  • Delayed coming-of-age for millennials and Gen Z

 

 

Who You Are:

• A smart, funny digital native with a strong aesthetic eye and a clear voice

• Organized, with attention to detail

• Familiar with (or excited to dive into) Tamil and South Asian diasporic culture

• Experienced in making memes, reels, or TikToks, whether for fun, for work, or both

• Basic graphic design skills (Canva, Photoshop, etc.)

• Comfortable editing short-form video (CapCut, InShot, Premiere, etc.)

• Reliable internet access is a must
